When I go to theater, I try to take off my “theatre professional” hat and leave it on a hook in the lobby. I watch performances a bit like a kid does: in order for me to not get bored and to love the show, I need to believe. Believe the character. Believe the director. Believe the playwright. I may enjoy the intellectual exercise, but for me to truly be impacted by a piece of theater is to connect with the actor in a way that’s stronger than just understanding that she or he is good.
