In an era where scientific exploration and advancement have, more than ever, become controversial issues of morality and responsibility, there is no story more timely or relevant than Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, a true pillar of gothic horror—a horror which arises not only from shocks and thrills but from the probing ethical questions it raises on the dangers of discovery and the mysteries of life itself. Frankenstein is a new play developed by Paata Tsikurishvili and company member Nathan Weinberger, who sought to tell a story which, unlike many previous adaptations, strove to be as faithful as possible to Shelley’s original novel. The tale of Frankenstein—a story of passionate brilliance, daring and ambition pushed to horrifically devastating heights, as science violently clashes with the supernatural. Synetic Theater brings its own blend of “cinematic vitality” (The Washington Post) and sweeping drama to his classic work.
Synetic's wordless production examines societal ills through the magnifying glass of Shakespeare's dark, brooding tale of a husband and wife's lust for power placed in modern militaristic times. An inescapable swirl of murder, madness, and self-destruction will be unveiled but never forgotten through Synetic's synthesis of art forms.
The animals of Manor Farm decide that the world would be better off without the thoughtless and degrading rule of humans, but after the revolution, the animals sink into corruption, hierarchical inner societies, and political betrayal. The Tsikurishvilis’ personal experience with pre- and post-Communist era Georgia, and the Cold War Germany mixed with their specialty, “rapturously surrealist stagecraft” (The Washington City Paper), will turn this commentary on Soviet Russia into a timeless and universal piece.
Since bursting onto the Washington DC theater scene in 2002 with their inaugural production of Hamlet...the rest is silence, a production which garnered international attention as well as three top Helen Hayes Awards including Best Director and Resident Play, Synetic Theater has established itself as Washington's premiere theater company for movement and the exploration of "the art of silence".
